Legal Assistant Profession
Legal assistants are essential members of the legal profession. They are responsible for completing legal research, editing and proofreading legal documents, working directly with clients, locating witnesses, maintaining attorney calendars, setting appointments, and completing various other legal duties.
Legal assistants are not attorneys, and they are not able to provide legal advice or serve as legal advisors in a courtroom setting. However, they often work directly with clients, they may be present during legal transactions, and they many serve as notaries. In order to be successful, legal assistants must possess some important skills, including the ability to complete legal research and proofread and edit legal documents. They must have a high level of organization as well as excellent communication skills and a general knowledge of the law.
While legal assistants are not always present during meetings between attorneys and clients, they are important “behind-the-scenes” workers. They are responsible for keeping files organized, drafting legal documents, answering client calls, and maintaining a law firm’s library. Many aspiring legal assistants enroll in an associate’s degree or certificate program which provides training and education.
Some law firms or solo practitioner attorneys only hire legal assistants who have graduated from an accredited legal assistant or paralegal training program because proper training helps to ensure that graduates have the skills necessary to succeed in the legal field. While it is not required by all law firms, some require and prefer that their legal assistants achieve certification from the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA).
